A 6-year-old boy is recuperating from serious injuries after he was attacked by a pit bull at a birthday party Monday night.
Witnesses say Armani McKinnis was among several people in a yard in the 7400 block of South Champlain when the dog attacked.
"Two wild dogs came around the corner, started messing with the family across the street, me and my family were trying to get the kids out the way, putting all the kids in the jumper so the dog wouldn't bother them," said Michael Marshall, who witnessed the attack. As we were doing it, one child didn't make it in time."
Marshall said he and two of his nephews tried to save the boy from the dog, kicking it, hitting it with chairs and standing on its neck to force it to let go of the boy. Eventually the dog let the boy go and ran away.
Armani suffered facial injuries and bites to his leg. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday and out of the pediatric intensive care unit.
"It's not enough for me, I wanted to do more, but as long as he's OK and doing fine, that's what I'm happy about," Marshall said.
The attacking dog has not been found.
