Sheriff Plays Scrooge in Holiday Sting

Cook County used money and gift cards to arrest 230 people

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart played the role of Scrooge Sunday  morning in a holiday sting. The scene took place at a Chicago hotel. Guest stars included 230 people wanted on warrants.

The ruse was part of  huge sweep in Cook County  for people wanted on warrants from aggravated battery to a police officer to failure to pay child support, according to a release from the Cook County Sheriff’s office.  Other suspects were arrested on warrants for driving under the influence, forgery, retail theft and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Sheriff lured people with a fake "Shoptastic Solutions" mailing, saying the fugitives had been chosen for a shopping survey to help local retailers. The mailer asked for people to call and make a reservation at a local hotel during the weekend of Dec. 6-7, according to a release.

More than 60 people responded to the initial mailer. No word on the results of the survey.
