Pfleger Calls on Chicago Stars to do More to Fight Violence

South side pastor calls out Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Jennifer Hudson and Quentin Richardson by name, pleads with them to do more to help fight violence

A south side pastor, fed up with an ongoing spate of shootings claiming the lives of Chicago's youth, called upon those who've found success to do more to protect those living with violence.

"I'm asking Dwayne [Wade]. I’m asking Derrick Rose. I’m asking Jennifer Hudson. I’m asking Quentin Richardson. All those folks from Chicago. We need you. I’m begging you. Come out here And talk to these young people. They’re wearing your shoes. They’ll listen to you. Your voice means something. My voice doesn’t mean anything," Fr. Michael Pfleger said Friday at a rally near the scene of a shooting a day earlier that left one dead and five injured.

Among the injured was the nephew of Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

After learning of the shooting, Wade released a statement that said his thoughts were wish his nephew and his sister.

"One of the goals of my foundation, the Wade’s World Foundation, is to continue to spread the message that the violence needs to stop," his statement said, in part.

For his part, Bulls star Rose vowed last December to not forget where he came from.

"That's what I have been thinking about, especially in the future, just building, especially starting with my neighborhood, Englewood, building it back up first and trying to expand from there," Rose said in December after signing a multi-million dollar contract extention. "I haven't really thought about it, but when I do think about it and get an idea, you'll hear about it."

And despite finding her own success, Jennifer Hudson has had violence hit close to home. Her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew were slain in 2008 in what prosecutors say was a domestic incident. A trial for the man accused in the triple homicide is expected to begin next month.
