Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, and Major League Soccer superstar, David Beckham is close to leaving the team to join Italian giants AC Milan in January for a second time, team officials said Thursday.

Team president Tim Leiweke told the BBC he was happy to let Beckham go so the aging but talented player could get as much playing time before the World Cup in 2010. Beckham is trying to secure a spot on the England national squad and sees the move to Milan as a necessary step to stay in shape and show case his talent.

"We want to get a deal done for him and for us," Leiweke said. "He's a class act, a great player and I'm proud of what he's doing with the national team. So we would be honored to do that again if it helps David because we want to make sure he fulfils that dream."

The financial terms of the proposed deal haven't been disclosed. Goal.com reported that the loan to Milan should be finalised in the next two weeks.

Beckham, 34, enjoyed a good season with the Galaxy and helped guide them into the playoffs for the first time in four years. Team officials want to secure the Beckham deal before the MLS final in November.

Last year, he joined AC Milan on loan and suprised observers with his energetic play and quickly became a starter on the star studded Italian team. His performance lead to a call-up for national team duty on a talented English squad but an acrimonious return to L.A. with fans and teammates questioning his committment to the team.
