Wisconsin Trooper Shot, Killed by Robbery Suspect

The suspect, who was killed in a shootout with the trooper, is also believed to have killed a carjacking victim after the bank robbery

A Wisconsin state trooper was shot and killed Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire with a person who matched the description of a bank robbery suspect, officials said. The robbery suspect also was killed.

Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb said at a brief news conference late Tuesday that the Wisconsin State Patrol trooper was following the suspect's vehicle about 5:30 p.m. when the incident occurred.

"Both the trooper and the suspect were killed in the exchange of gunfire," Lamb said. He said no other suspects were being sought.

The suspect is also believed to have killed a carjacking victim after the bank robbery.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve says the body of a man believed to be in his 60s was found Tuesday afternoon near a running pickup truck along a road east of Wausaukee. He says investigators identified the truck as the vehicle stolen earlier from State Bank of Florence in Wausaukee.

The sheriff's office said the bank robbery was reported about 1:43 p.m. and the man's body was discovered around 2:35 p.m.

The state Department of Justice said its Division of Criminal Investigation was investigating several crimes.

"We cannot confirm at this time definitively how these crimes fit together but investigators are working to provide an accurate timeline of events," the department said in a statement late Tuesday.
