Lightning Sparks House Fire in Crystal Lake

There were no injuries but the family may be displaced for several months

    Firefighters on Monday said about $65,000 worth of damage was done to a Crystal Lake home after lightning sparked a fire in the attic.

    Crews responding to the home on the 4000 block of Ned Drive at about 3 a.m. found smoke and flames venting from the attic of the two-story, single-family home.

    "We heard a loud, thunderous boom. It shook the whole house. [I] got up, wandered around and didn't notice anything, and then about another five minutes later it smelled like candles were burning. I came outside and looked around the house and saw the tip of the house was on fire," said homeowner Scott Debates.

    The fire was completely out by 3:45 a.m., Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue Battalion Chief Thomas Pollnow said.
