2 Dead, at Least 18 Wounded in Shootings Across Chicago This Weekend

Two people have been killed and at least 18 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend.

The first fatal shooting of the weekend occurred just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday night in the 1300 block of West Huron, according to police.

A 22-year-old man was found by police with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police say that a black SUV was seen fleeing the scene, but no suspects are in custody.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday, another fatal shooting occurred, this time in the 5200 block of South Artesian. A 39-year-old man and his wife were driving when they noticed a red truck following them.

The driver of the truck then flashed a gang sign, and the man returned it. The person in the red truck then opened fire, striking the man in the back of the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his wife was unharmed in the shooting. No one is in custody.

In the city’s first shooting of the weekend, three men were injured when a person in an unknown vehicle fired shots at them. Two of the men were in one car, and the other individual was in a second vehicle, according to authorities.

Two of the victims, both 18 years old, were taken to Norwegian Hospital in good condition, and a third victim, a 22-year-old, was shot in the wrist and was taken to Norwegian in good condition.

Police are still looking for suspects in the shooting.

A short time later, a 36-year-old man was shot in the 3000 block of East 79th Street, according to police. The man was able to escape the residence and walked to a nearby bus stop, where police discovered him.

The man was shot a total of five times in the chest and once in the face, and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Here are the rest of the shootings across the city this weekend:

Saturday:

  • A 23-year-old man was shot in both hands when a person in a grey vehicle opened fire, according to police. The incident occurred in the 200 block of South Hoyne just before 11 a.m., and the victim was taken to Cook County Hospital in good condition.
  • A 22-year-old woman was in a vehicle when she was shot in the back in the 6900 block of South Anthony at approximately 2:41 p.m., police said. The woman was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, and three persons of interest are being questioned.
  • In the 6300 block of South Cottage Grove at approximately 6:16 p.m., a 22-year-old man was riding in the front seat of a vehicle when a person in the back seat of the car opened fire, striking him in the back. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition.
  • A 35-year-old man was involved in a verbal altercation in the 4400 block of West Congress Parkway at approximately 7:01 p.m. when he was shot. He was taken to Loretto Hospital in stable condition.

Sunday:

  • A 35-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot multiple times while sitting in his car, police said. The incident occurred at approximately 1:17 a.m. in the 5200 block of West Thomas, and witnesses were uncooperative with authorities at the scene.
  • A 15-year-old boy was walking in the 3600 block of West Ohio at approximately 3 a.m. when a person in a dark-colored sedan opened fire, striking him in the leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, according to authorities.
  • In the 5000 block of West Newport at approximately 3:30 a.m. a 22-year-old man was walking when a person in a vehicle opened fire. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in stable condition with gunshot wounds to his abdomen, groin, and foot.
  • Three people were injured when a person opened fire at the vehicle they were traveling in. The incident occurred in the 6500 block of South Hoyne just after 4 a.m. when a black van fired shots, striking two of the victims. A 15-year-old girl was shot in the leg and was taken to Comer’s Children’s Hospital in good condition, and a 23-year-old man, who was driving, was taken to University of Chicago in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his groin. Another girl, a 16-year-old girl, was struck by shattering glass and was taken to Comer’s in good condition with cuts to her face and body.
  • An 18-year-old woman is in good condition after she was shot in the 2000 block of West Pershing at approximately 4:15 a.m., police said. The woman was a passenger in a vehicle when she heard gunfire. She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
  • In the 2300 block of South Sawyer, a 21-year-old man was shot in the right leg, police said. The man is in good condition at Rush University Medical Center.
  • A 17-year-old was shot in the left arm in the 5200 block of South Parkside just before 4 p.m. Sunday. The boy was walking in an alley when a black sedan pulled up and an occupant began yelling gang slogans. The boy was taken to McNeal in stable condition. 
  • Just before 7 p.m., two men were shot in the 1700 block of North Troy. A 30-year-old man was shot in the leg and is in stable condition at St. Mary's. A second man is providing no information to police and refused medical treatment. 

There are no suspects in custody in any of these shootings unless otherwise noted.
