McHenry County Shooting Suspect Held on $1M Bail

Scott Peters charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm

The man accused of shooting two sheriff's deputies in McHenry County Thursday was ordered held on $1 million bail after an hours-long manhunt.

Scott Peters, a 52-year-old military veteran, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Police said Peters used a rifle around 1:30 a.m. Thursday to fire through the front door of his Holiday Hills home in the 1300 block of West Northeast Shore Drive, injuring two deputies who were responding to the home for a domestic dispute.

Dwight Maness, a seven-year veteran deputy, was shot in the leg and abdomen and is recovering at Advocate Condell in Libertyville. Khalia Satkiewicz, a 12-year veteran, was shot in the leg and is recovering at Centegra Hospital in Woodstock.

Peters disappeared after the shooting, and the search for him involved 250 officers from Lake and McHenry counties, as well as state police, the FBI and U.S. Marshals.

In the end, residents gave police the lead they needed. Officials announced just after 5 p.m. that Peters was "safely in custody."

Police said Peters was located at 176th Street and Smith Road and was arrested by three deputies who were called to the scene after two neighbors reported seeing a man fitting his description.

Peters was found unarmed, but police said they recovered what is believed to be the rifle used in the shooting Friday. Police found a ballistic vest, helmet and a rifle from a channel off of Holiday Drive in Holiday Hills.

Officials said both officers are expected to survive but will face a "long road to recovery."

Residents are relieved to be back in their homes. Peters' next court date was set for Oct. 21.
