Man Charged in Shooting That Wounded 61-Year-Old Woman in Chicago

Martinez is accused of firing a gun into a home in the 3600 block of South Honore Street Tuesday before leading police on a miles-long chase

A Chicago man was charged Friday in connection with a shooting that left a 61-year-old woman wounded while she sat in her living room on the city’s Southwest Side.

Manuel Martinez, 33, of the 200 block of West 35th Street in Chicago, was charged with one count of felony aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated fleeing police.

Martinez is accused of firing a gun into a home in the 3600 block of South Honore Street Tuesday before leading police on a miles-long chase that extended into suburban Chicago.

The shooting left a 61-year-old woman, identified by family as Miriam Enriquez, with a gunshot wound to the neck. Enriquez was sitting in her living room when bullets pierced the front window of the home, police said.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired said they noticed a vehicle with no headlights about a block away, but when they tried to pull the car over the driver sped away.

Police chased the fleeing vehicle from the 3700 block of South Wolcott to southbound Interstate 55 and onto the northbound ramp to Interstate 294, where it crashed, authorities said.

Martinez was taken into custody and charged, police said. He is expected to appear in bond court Friday.
