Three More People Sought in Derrion Albert's Death

$6,000 in rewards offered for information that leads to arrests

Three additional people are being sought by police in connection with last week's beating death of Derrion Albert, and a total of $6,000 in rewards have been offered in an attempt to gain information which leads to more arrests.

"Every resident should of Chicago should be saddened at Derrion's death, as well as the other senseless violence that occurs in our society," said Chicago police Supt. Jody Weis during a Tuesday afternoon press conference.  "My thoughts and families are with Derrion's family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss."

Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward and St. Sabina Church is offering $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

So far, four teens have been charged with first-degree murder.

Silvanus Shannon ,19, Eugene Riley ,18, and Eric Carson, 16, were all charged as adults earlier Monday and were ordered held without bond.

A fourth teen, Eugene Bailey, 18, was charged Monday evening and denied bond during his court appearance Tuesday.  He had been in police custody since Friday, when he went to police voluntarily to answer questions.

A prosecutor said Bailey dealt the "knockout punch" that killed Albert.

Weis also said police are also considering seeking charges against those who participated in the fight but did not hit Albert.

"We should not, as a society, or as a community, condone or tolerate that sort of behavior in our streets," he said.

Frustrated with the lack of leads in the case, Weis spoke directly to those in Albert's community.

"This is not a time for such silence.  The culture of 'no snitch' is unacceptable," Weis said, adding that acts of retaliation only perpetuate more crimes.

Albert died last Thursday while walking home from school in the Roseland neighborhood.  His relatives believe he was beaten to death for refusing to join a South Side gang.

Two days later, police began studying a recorded video of the beating.  Weis said the U.S. Secret Service is trying to enhance the video in order to more accurately identify those on it.

Extra police patrols are scheduled to be around the school during morning and dismissal times, as well as CTA stops and the main routes students take to get home.

Crisis management counselors have begun going door-to-door in the neighborhood to make people aware of conflict resolution and conflict management programs, Chicago Housing Authority CEO Lewis Jordan said.

Weis pleaded for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.  Area 2 detectives can be reached at 312-747-8272.  Information can also be sent via a text message to CRIMES (274637).  Please put CPD in the headline.

Crime Stoppers will also accept information.  Their number is 1-800-535-STOP.
