Metra to Install Defibrillators Throughout System

Action comes after an August 2011 decision by Metra's board

Roughly 425 potentially life-saving defibrillators will soon be installed throughout the Metra rail system, officials said Friday.

Approximately 300 automatic external defibrillators will be on trains. Another 125 will be in Metra facilities and in Metra police vehicles, the agency said.

Chicago is only the second metropolitan area in the nation to bring AEDs to commuter
trains. Boston is the other one.

The action comes after an August 2011 decision by Metra's board. At that time, the cost was estimated at $1.1 million.

Metra is partnering with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Cardiac Science.
