Upon hearing the news that Mayor Daley would not seek reelection, Rahm Emanuel didn't flinch.
"While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision to not run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago," Emanuel said in a statement to NBC.
Emanuel made no secret of his desire to succeed Daley, announcing as much on the Charlie Rose show in March. Speculation abounds that Emanuel could leave his post as White House Chief of Staff and seek the city's top job, even if he didn't say as much in his reaction.
