How Brennen Davis Put Himself in Cubs' Plans for 2022

How Davis put himself in Cubs' plans for 2022 originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

When might Brennen Davis reach the big leagues?

Davis was promoted to Triple-A Iowa earlier this month, capping off an impressive 2021 minor-league season, and a big-league promotion may not be far behind at some point in 2022.

“I think he's already accelerated his timeline this year,” Cubs president Jed Hoyer said. “If you ask me about dates or times, I'm not going to go there.

"But listen, clearly he really put himself on the radar this year with a great performance at all levels.”

It's been an especially impressive season from Davis considering he had only 68 games of minor-league experience entering this season, and none in 2020 after the minors season was canceled due to COVID-19.

He spent 2020 at the Cubs' alternate site in South Bend and started 2021 with Single-A South Bend before a quick promotion to Double-A Tennessee. The Cubs promoted him to Iowa this month so he could get more at-bats with the Double-A season ending.

No matter the level, all Davis has done this season is hit. In 93 games with South Bend, Tennessee and Iowa, he’s slashing .271/.379/.517 with 19 home runs and 50 RBIs.

He's off to a hot start with Iowa (.371/.450/.771, four home runs, nine RBIs in nine games) and even hit a pair of home runs in the Futures Game earlier this summer, taking home MVP honors.

“What he did in the Futures Game was a lot of fun to watch, but really it's been pretty consistent throughout the year,” Hoyer said. “I’m glad he’s with us.”

Davis is not only the Cubs top prospect, but the closest to the majors among those who could make up their next competitive core.

His success this season led to a massive jump across prospect rankings, to a consensus top 20. His performance in Triple-A has only added to the intrigue.

“He's had an incredible year," Hoyer said, "and I think he's already accelerated his path by doing what he did in Double-A.

"It was really special and obviously going up this year to Triple-A, he's continued to perform well."
