Bears lose two offensive assistant coaches to Falcons originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Bears are losing at least two offensive assistants on head coach Matt Nagy’s coaching staff, including one that had been with the team for five seasons.
Dave Ragone was announced as the Atlanta Falcons’ new offensive coordinator Thursday, and a source confirmed to NBC Sports Chicago that Charles London will join Ragone in Atlanta as quarterbacks coach.
Ragone, 41, was the Bears’ quarterbacks coach from 2016-19 and received a small promotion to passing game coordinator in 2020. The move to Atlanta is another promotion for Ragone, who is considered a rising offensive mind in the NFL coaching profession. New Falcons head coach Arthur Smith will handle the play-calling duties, however. Smith was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee before the Falcons hired him earlier this week.
London, 46, was the Bears’ running backs coach for the last three seasons and has never been a quarterbacks coach. The move is a step up in the coaching ranks, however, and gets him one step closer to becoming an offensive coordinator.
Nagy will need to hire a new running backs coach, but its possible the passing game coordinator position remains unfilled, especially because it only existed in 2020. Nagy, offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo all collaborate on the offense and that is expected to continue.
