6 Dead, Hundreds Hurt in Train Crash Outside Paris

At least six people are dead and more than 200 injured after a passenger train derailed in France. The train had been carrying some 350 passengers from Paris to Limoges when it crashed into the station at Bretigny-sur-Orge, some 12 miles south of Paris. The train derailed at the point of changing tracks after something caused it to lose control, rail company SNCF chief Guillaume Pepy told reporters Friday. In addition to the six killed, 22 were severely wounded, while another 190 were being treated for lesser injuries, according to Pepy. He said the train had entered the station at a high speed because it wasn't supposed to stop there, and he praised the conductor for managing to stop the train before it could crash into another one on the same track. Most of the injured are believed to have been evacuated, but a further search could find more victims. Four of the train's six cars were severely damaged, and heavy machinery was being brought in to lift them.
