1 Boy Rescued, Another Missing in Wauconda Lake: Officials

Two boys, 9 and 11, were on a paddle boat Friday in a north suburban lake when they began screaming for help, officials said, prompting nearby fishermen to rescue one while divers continue searching for the other.

Authorities in Wauconda responded to the water rescue at Bangs Beach at 7:20 p.m. A 11-year-old was rescued by local anglers and taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center with injuries considered non-life-threatening, offials said. The 9-year-old boy was believed to still be in the water while sonar techs and about 15 divers continued searching for him.

Det. Heather Cognac, with the Wauconda Police Department, said it “seems like they might be neighbors” and said the boys were from the area but did not specify where exactly they lived.

A Wauconda fire official said they were nearing the critical two-hour mark in the search where they may have to switch from a rescue to a recovery operation. He estimated the temperature of the water was in the upper 40s.

No other information was immediately available.
