Skokie Police Officer Injured in Crash With Stolen Van

An overnight crime spree involving burglaries and stolen vehicles ended in a crash that sent a suburban Chicago police officer to the hospital.

The incident began when Skokie police received a call around 12:30 a.m. reporting that a group of people had been breaking into cars and walking through yards of homes near the 5300 block of West Harvard.

Soon after another, another call to police came in reporting a vehicle being taken from a nearby garage, authorities said.

After officers arrived to the scene, the group took off in a red van that authorities say was stolen to pull off the robberies.

As the van was traveling eastbound on Oakton while fleeing the scene, it crashed into the squad car of a Skokie police officer who had been responding to the stolen vehicle.

The female officer inside was taken to an area hospital to be treated. The extent of her injuries is still unknown, but she is expected to be okay, police said.

After crashing the vehicle, at least three suspects were taken into custody, according to police, but authorities believe more are connected to the crime spree that were not apprehended.

Skokie, Evanston and Lincolnwood Police Departments are working with Illinois State Police as the investigation into the incident continues.
