Money crunch hurts private schools

The soured economy has private schools facing public school problems -- especially lack of funding.

Enrollments are not keeping up with operating expenses, and families are finding themselves unable to afford tuition and having to transfer their children to the nearby public school.

The Archdiocese of Chicago in January announced a program to assist struggling families, and within days their offices were overwhelmed with applicants.

The Chicago Tribune reported that, "Financial aid applications and scholarships are on the rise, and admissions applications are flat to slightly declining." 

From Catholic schools to prestigious private institutions, school administrators are trying to come up with ways to aid their students while keeping their heads above water.
