Armed Suspect Fatally Shot By Chicago Police After Shooting Near Lakeview Bar

An armed man was shot to death by Chicago police Sunday morning after the suspect fired shots at an individual outside of a bar in Lakeview, officials said.

The incident occurred in the 3600 block of North Ashland around 5:15 a.m., Chicago police said.

Authorities said they encountered a man on a nearby street after he reportedly shot an individual in the neck and cheek. An altercation shortly ensued with police.

The victim shot was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and will undergo surgery, officials said; and although the officer involved was not shot, he was also transported to a medical facility for suffering minor injuries, "bumps and bruises" after falling in his pursuit of the offender.

Police later confirmed the armed suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

"The Officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days," read a statement issued by police.

No other details were immediately known.

An investigation remains underway.
