A Chicago police officer was dragged by a car during a traffic stop on the city's Southwest Side early Tuesday, authorities said.
Around 12:38 a.m., on-duty officers in a marked squad car pulled over a van in the 5700 block of South Western Avenue, according to police. While questioning the driver, authorities said an officer saw a weapon on the floor of the backseat.
The driver then attempted to flee the scene, according to police, dragging the officer for roughly two blocks south.
The vehicle crashed in the 5900 block of South Western Avenue, striking another car, a gas meter and the side of a building, officials said.
Authorities said the offender then tried to escape on foot, but was quickly caught and taken into custody.
The officer sustained injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, according to police, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was listed in good condition.
Authorities said a weapon was recovered from the vehicle. Charges were pending against the driver, according to police, who continue to investigate.
