A dog fell from a 43rd-floor apartment balcony Wednesday, just days after a cat plunged from the same deck.
The man who lives there, who asked to be identified only as Ryan, told the Chicago Sun-Times that both of the deaths were accidents. Police apparently agreed and said no citations would be issued.
Ryan said no one was home when Duke, a Rottweiler-Shar Pei mix belonging to his visiting parents, jumped or fell from the balcony of the building on the 300 block of South Water Street. A doorman said the dog landed in front of the building's front door.
Days earlier, one of Ryan's cats plummeted from the same balcony. Ryan said he believes the dog may have frightened the cat, causing it to fall from the ledge.
Officers investigating a possible case of animal cruelty later said they are treating the pet deaths as accidents.
"Police were questioning and threatening to arrest me," Ryan said. “Slowly but surely they, thank God, they believed what I told them.”
