A west suburban man’s simple trip to the store for hamburger meat quickly turned into a million dollar affair after he decided to purchase a lottery ticket.
Dan Hoffmann was hosting a Fourth of July barbecue at his Yorkville home when he ran out of hamburger meat.
“A lot more people showed up than I was expecting,” he told lottery officials.
Hoffmann made a quick trip to a local grocery store, a Jewel-Osco located at 234 E. Veterans Pkwy., and while there decided to buy a $2 Powerball ticket.
“I play Powerball once in a while and I always buy Quick Picks,” he said.
Several days later, Hoffmann checked the winning Powerball numbers and discovered he won $1 million.
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it and I don’t think I slept at all that night,” he said. “I can’t believe I won a million dollars because we ran out of hamburgers.”
