2 Infants Found Safe After Car Stolen From Gas Station

Two infants were found safe after they were left inside a vehicle that was stolen early Sunday on Chicago’s South Side.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. at a gas station in the 8700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the city’s Burnside neighborhood, according to police.

Authorities said a 36-year-old man entered the gas station to buy a bottle of water and left his black Chevy running with two infants inside.

He then saw a man get into his vehicle and drive away, Chicago police said.

The brazen theft was caught on surveillance video, showing the man frantically running outside as his car pulls out of the lot.

“He was so scared and like, knocked at the glass and tell us like his car’s stolen and his kids inside it,” said Mohamed Saleh, who works at the gas station and said he and other employees were “shocked” by the incident.

“He came back and he was scared and he was about to cry and said, ‘Call the police, please,’” added Sam Abdo, another gas station employee.

About five minutes later, responding officers found the car legally parked a few blocks away in the 800 block of East 90th Street with both infants unharmed inside, officials said.

No one is in custody in connection with the theft and the father of the children will not be charged, according to Chicago police, who continue to investigate.
