Car Smashes Into Hammond Home in Fatal Crash After Police Chase

Emergency responders in Hammond, Indiana, were on the scene of a fatal crash that some neighbors say may have started as a high-speed police chase.

Hammond fire officials, police and the Lake County coroner were on scene near the corner at 165th Street and Blaine Avenue. The coroner later identified 25-year-old Antonio Short, of Hammond, as the person who had died. It was unclear if Antonio was in the car, struck by it or how exactly he was involved in the chase and crash.

Indiana State Police confirmed authorities were chasing the vehicle that crashed. That vehicle is believed to have struck another car before flipping and crashing into a home.

The coroner said Short had suffered blunt force trauma but his manner of death was listed as "pending."

A white sheet covered a body at the scene.

165th Street was shut down in both directions.

Indiana State Police were investigating.
