Extreme Weather Slows USPS Deliveries

Officials said they expect to catch up deliveries in Chicago by Saturday

The United States Postal Service has confirmed what many people have probably already noticed -- mail service has slowed down this week.

The "rain, sleet or snow" motto took a serious hit this week with snow and excessive cold.

Chicago USPS spokesman Mark Reynolds said mail carriers have hit their routes every day this week, but haven't been able to get everywhere.

The non-delivery areas are scattered, with no specific areas hit worse than any other, Reynolds said.

In an effort to keep mail carriers safe in the extreme cold, shifts were kept to eight hours with no overtime allowed.

Officials said they expect to catch up by Saturday.

The public is urged to stay patient and to keep walkways clear.
