Police Officer Fired Gun at Suspect Who Drove Vehicle at Him

An Elmhurst police officer fired a gun Tuesday afternoon when a suspect allegedly drove at the officer during a traffic stop in the western suburb, authorities said.

About 4:45 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle near the intersection of York Street and Crestview Avenue, according to a statement from Crestview Police Chief Michael Ruth.

“During the traffic stop, the suspect drove the vehicle in the direction of the officer, and the officer’s firearm was discharged,” Ruth said in the statement.

The suspect’s vehicle crashed into another vehicle as he drove away, Ruth said. The officers involved in the incident were not injured.

The vehicle was later found in the 1000 block of North Parkside in the West Side Austin neighborhood, according to Ruth and Chicago Police. The driver was still at large Wednesday afternoon.

The incident remained under investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department, the DuPage Major Crimes Task Force and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
