Driver Taken Into Custody After 1 Killed in Hit-and-Run in Deerfield, Police Say

Officers found an unidentified woman lying in the road at around 11:37 a.m. Friday

The driver of a vehicle was taken into custody on Friday afternoon following a hit-and-run crash that killed one person in north suburban Deerfield, police said.

At around 11:37 am., officers responded to the crash in the 800 block of North Waukegan Road, and found an unidentified woman lying in the road, according to a news release from the Deerfield Police Department.

"All of a sudden I hear a scream and look over, and I see the case [that the victim was carrying] goes up in the air," witness Jeff Piachenza said.

The victim, a 53-year-old woman, was taken to Highland Park Hospital, but later died, according to the Lake County coroner. The coroner's office had yet to release the victim's name by late Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said they tried to comfort the victim.

"I am devastated," one witness said. "She was carrying a cake. Devastated."

The driver, a 68-year-old man, was found away from the scene, and taken into custody, police said.

The incident remained under investigation on Friday by Deerfield police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. Depending on the outcome of the investigation and toxicology results, the case could be sent to the Lake County State's Attorney's Office for possible charges, police said.
