DePaul Warns of Campus Hate Crimes

Shouting "fag" and "queer", three men beat and kicked a 19-year-old student

Patrick Stewart, a student at DePaul University, says three men kicked him and beat him while calling him queer and spewing hateful things at him not far from the North Side campus last month.

Police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, one of a pair of hate crimes that have occured on the campus in the last month.

In the second incident, posters featuring a Palestinian guest speaker were defaced, some with swastikas drawn over the speaker's face. On others, CBS2 reported, a person drew a Hitler-like mustache.

In response to the two incidents, students on campus are forming a hate-awareness group.

As for 19-year-old Stewart, he's sharing his story in hopes of sparing others from similar attacks. Mostly, he says, he's struggling to figure out why someone would do such a thing.
