Chicago and the state of Illinois are already reaping the benefits of the new blockbuster film "Contagion," which opened in theaters across the city Friday.
Since making Chicago, as well as other parts of the state its home for production, Contagion has made a significant impact on the Illinois economy, generating approximately $12.5 million in spending, which has led to approximately 250 job openings, including gigs for extras, officials said.
"The economic impact of the production of Contagion is far reaching," said Warren Ribley, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The production provided millions of dollars in economic activity in the state and created many jobs for Illinois crew.”
The movie was shot in the late summer early fall seasons of last year throughout Chicagoland.
The city has had its fair share of big screen exposures throughout recent years, hosting productions to blockbuster hits "The Dark Knight," and "Transformers 3."
The second-city will also serve as "Metropolis" to the new Superman movie tittled “Man of Steel,” which is scheduled to open in theaters in 2013.
The Illinois Film Tax Credit provides a 30 percent tax credit to filmmakers for money spent on Illinois goods and services. That includes wages paid to Illinois residents.
