Toddler Killed, 3 Injured in West Side House Fire

A 3-year-old boy was killed and his older brother is in critical condition following a fire in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago.

The fire broke out in a two-flat building in the 100 block of North Laramie shortly before 8 p.m.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the back porches were fully involved in both occupied buildings.

Some of the residents were forced to flee from the homes into the cold, but firefighters had to rescue the two young siblings and an adult relative, according to fire media affairs.

The 3-year-old boy, identified as Jaantwiaon Edwards, was pronounced dead at Loretto Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His brother remained in critical condition Saturday at Loyola University Medical Center.

Neighbors say one of the children had cerebral palsy.

The female relative was transported to West Suburban Hospital where officials say she is in stable condition.

A police officer with asthma was also treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Officials say several people were displaced by the fire. The Chicago Red Cross is assisting 20 residents displaced by the fire.

It's not clear how the blaze started.
