Chicago Violence: At Least 10 Killed, 43 Wounded in Weekend Violence

At least 51 people were shot, eight fatally, and two others stabbed to death during a violent weekend across Chicago, according to police. 

The weekend’s first fatal shooting occurred late Friday night, at around 8:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of West 79th Street. A 35-year-old male was walking down the street when an unknown male offender exited a gangway, produced a weapon and fired shots, according to police. The man was shot multiple times in the head, chest and shoulder and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

At around 10:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Keeler, authorities said a 31-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when a person in a red sedan opened fire, striking him in the chest. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Then just before midnight Friday, a 24-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 900 block of North Karlov when a person walked up to him and opened fire, striking him in the neck and right arm, according to Chicago police. He was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Early Saturday morning, authorities responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 7700 block of South Morgan and found a 29-year-old victim lying next to a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, according to police.The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

At around 6:29 a.m., a 20-year-old man was found in a vehicle in the 4300 block of North Mozart with a fatal gunshot wound to the neck, according to police. Further details were not immediately available. 

A 26-year-old woman was outside near the 4900 block of S. Princeton around 4:10 a.m. Sunday when shots were fired and the victim was fatally struck in the chest. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

In the 100 block of North Avenue at around 5:55 a.m. Sunday, two vehicles were driving westbound on North Avenue when occupants of one of the vehicles began shooting at the other vehicle. The driver and passenger were shot multiple times. Both victims - a 22-year-old man who suffered from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper back, and a 25-year-old with multiple wounds to the body - were pronounced dead at the scene.

There were also two fatal stabbings that took place over the weekend, bringing the total number of people killed in Chicago to at least 10. 

"Weekends like this all our officers take this very personally," Area North Deputy Chief Al Nagode said during a press conference Monday. 

Chicago police said a large portion of the weekdn violence centered on "gang factions settling conflicts" or drugs. 

"Our incidents on the West Side were not random but rather could be tracked to gang conflicts in the area," he said, adding that officers were sent to saturate areas where retaliation was expected. 

Similar situation was reported on the city's South Side, where 12 shootings and two murders were reported.

"While the motive is unclear, gang violence remains at the heart of our most serious calls for service," said Area South Deputy Chief Elgin Holt. 

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said in several cases, shootings took place with police officers just blocks away. 

"That just shows how bolden these criminals are," he said, echoing his repeated calls for stricter penalties for gun offenders. 

"It’s ridiculous to me that we know that when we arrest these gun offenders… half of them get out and are back on the street in a week or less," he added. 

The rest of the weekend's non-fatal shootings occurred as listed below. Unless otherwise noted, no one was in custody in connection with any of the incidents, which remain under investigation, according to Chicago police. 

Friday:

• Two people were shot as they were driving in the 100 block of North Lorel at approximately 6:28 p.m., police said. A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest and arm, and is in serious condition at Mount Sinai. The other victim, a 24-year-old man, is in serious condition at Mount Sinai after being shot in the abdomen and leg.
• Just before 10 p.m. in the 9400 block of South Normal, a 29-year-old man was sitting on his porch when a person in a white Chevy Sedan drove up and fired shots at him, striking him in the hip and groin according to police. The man was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
• Two men were shot while standing in the backyard of a home in the 10600 block of South Lafayette at approximately 10:25 p.m., police said. A 26-year-old man was taken in stable condition to Roseland, and a 42-year-old man was taken to Roseland with gunshot wounds to both legs. The man is in serious condition, according to police.
• A 36-year-old man was standing inside a restaurant in the 2400 block of East 72^nd Place at approximately 10:32 p.m. when a man walked inside and opened fire, striking him in the back. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, police said.
• A 22-year-old woman was riding in a vehicle in the 4800 block of West Van Buren at approximately 10:35 p.m. when she was shot in the right knee, according to police. The woman realized she’d been shot after she fled the scene and crashed her car. She was taken to Mount Sinai in stable condition.
• In the 4800 block of West Quincy at approximately 10:40 p.m., two groups of people became involved in a verbal altercation, and one of the involved individuals opened fire, striking a 58-year-old man in the lower back, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition.
• Just before midnight, two people were shot in the 6300 block of South Rockwell, according to police. The victims told authorities that they were standing on a sidewalk when they heard gunfire. A 27-year-old man was shot in the upper right thigh, and an 18-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks. Both victims were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition.

Saturday:

• A 24-year-old man was driving a vehicle in the 400 block of North Pulaski at approximately 12:02 a.m. when a black Dodge Challenger pulled up alongside his car and opened fire, striking him. He was taken to Mount Sinai, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.
• In the 3700 block of West Diversey at approximately 12:19 a.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the chest and the right leg, according to police. No further information on the shooting is available, and the victim is in critical condition at Illinois Masonic.
• Two people were shot in the 4000 block of West Wilcox at approximately 12:30 a.m., police said. A 31-year-old man, whom authorities found hiding in an alley, told police he was shot in the right arm while trying to break up a fight, and he was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. Another man, a 23-year-old, was shot in the legs and was listed in stable condition at Stroger. He was uncooperative with police, according to authorities.
• At approximately 1:30 a.m. in the 9900 block of South Halsted, a 35-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when two men got out of a red tow truck and assaulted him, according to police. The man then fled the scene, and the red tow truck chased him, with one of the occupants opening fire and striking him in the left leg. He was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
• In the 3900 block of West Grenshaw at approximately 1:35 a.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the right leg and was listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai. Police were alerted to the scene by ShotSpotter technology.
• A 32-year-old woman was shot in the right arm at approximately 1:45 a.m., police said. She is in stable condition at St. Bernard after the shooting, which took place in the 9400 block of South King Drive.
• At approximately 1:45 a.m., a 28-year-old man was approached by a group of five men in the 400 block of North State Street, and one of them opened fire, striking him in the leg. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in stable condition, and declined to provide more information to authorities on the incident.
• In the 1600 block of West Jonquil at approximately 1:46 a.m., a 53-year-old woman was shot in the right side of her torso as she was entering a building, police said. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in stable condition.
• Four men were shot in the 300 block of East Chicago, near Northwestern’s Chicago campus, according to police. Authorities say that two of the victims were standing outside a red van at the location when they heard shots and saw several vehicles flee the scene. Both victims were taken to Northwestern Medical Center in good condition. Two other men were shot while driving a silver Toyota at the location, and they flagged down an ambulance after fleeing the scene. Both of those men are in stable condition at area hospitals.
• At approximately 3:45 a.m. in the 8800 block of South Union, a 28-year-old man exited his home believing that his rideshare vehicle had arrived, and a person inside the car fired shots at him, striking him in both legs. He was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
• Three people were shot while driving southbound in the 1200 block of South Kostner at approximately 3:49 a.m., police said. The victims were driving when a red Chevy Impala pulled up alongside them and opened fire, striking the three victims. All three victims, a 19-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, and a 21-year-old woman, are in stable condition at area hospitals.
• Two people were shot in the 3000 block of West Flournoy around 6 p.m. A 19-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg and was transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. Another 26-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to the ear was transported to the same hospital in stable condition.
• Four people were all standing in a parking lot in the 5600 block of W. Madison around 9:47 p.m., when an unknown offender(s) fired shots from across the street, striking all four victims. It is currently unknown if the victims were all congregating together and who was the intended target however one of the victims is known to the police while the other victims do not appear to be. Victims included: a 17-year-old girl shot in the lower backside and in stable condition at Stroger, a 17-year-old boy shot in the lower backside and in stable condition at Mount Sinai, an 18-year-old man shot in the neck and in critical condition at Stroger, and a 22-year-old man shot in the arm and in stable condition at Mount Sinai.
