The somber sound of bagpipes filled the air in Chicago's North Center neighborhood early Wednesday to honor a fallen officer.
Dozens of officers gathered at the corner of West Belmont and North Western avenues at about 1:45 a.m. It was about that time in 2008 when Ofc. Richard Francis, a 27-year-veteran of the force, was killed.
Francis, 60, was shot by a woman who grabbed his gun after he responded to a disturbance on a Chicago Transit Authority bus. The woman, Robin Johnson, was later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
A wreath was placed at the corner where Francis died. A similar tribute was held in 2009.
