The Chicago Cubs have made their first roster cuts of spring training, trimming their squad down to 55 players.

The team announced Saturday that it had granted right-handed pitcher Rob Scahill his release. Scahill, whom the Cubs signed earlier this winter, graduated from Willowbrook High School in suburban Villa Park, and posted a 5.40 ERA with the Chicago White Sox last season.

The Cubs also sent 14 players to their minor league camp. A pair of high-profile pitchers were among those sent down, as Adbert Alzolay and Jen-Ho Tseng were both demoted to Triple-A Iowa. Pitchers Oscar De La Cruz and Justin Steele were both optioned to Double-A Tennessee.

A total of 10 non-roster invitees were sent down to the team’s minor league camp:

Pitchers: Alberto Baldonado, Craig Brooks, Ian Clarkin, Carlos Ramirez, Colin Rea, Duncan Robinson

Outfielders: Charcer Burks, Jacob Hannemann, Evan Marzilli

    Catcher: Ian Rice

There are now 55 players remaining on the Cubs’ roster. The team will next take the field on Sunday afternoon when they head to Maryvale to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a game that will air on WGN TV at 3:05 p.m.
