As the Chicago area braces for the coldest air so far this season, there is also the potential for another significant winter storm to follow.
Temperatures are set to drop dramatically in the days ahead, with wind chill values dipping to well-below zero.
Thursday looks to be the coldest day of the week, with highs in the single digits and wind chill readings between -10 and -25 degrees, bringing temperatures more often seen in January rather than mid-December.
After that, another weather event could bring significant snow to the area once again heading into the weekend.
The snow looks to develop during the late afternoon and early evening hours Friday as temperatures remain fairly cold. The system could impact the afternoon and evening rush hour, according to early predictions, but that could change as the potential storm nears.
Projected totals for the snow event continue to change and remain unclear as of Tuesday.

Current models predict at least several inches of snow could fall through Saturday morning, but the snow may transition to or mix with freezing rain, sleet and possibly even rain for a time which would impact storm totals dramatically before ending Saturday night or early Sunday. Any icy combination could also make travel even more dangerous.
Last weekend, some parts of the area saw up to 10 inches of snow.
