2 Shot, Including 84-Year-Old Man, in Carjacking Crime Spree: Police

Two people — one an 84-year-old man — were recovering after being shot in attempted carjackings Thursday evening, part of a crime spree that spanned two miles across Chicago's Near North Side, according to police.

Around 5:30 p.m., authorities said the suspect began by carjacking an on-duty undercover Chicago police officer in the 600 block of West Chicago Avenue.

The man took the officer's unmarked non-police vehicle to Rush and Oak Streets in the city's Gold Coast, where he tried to carjack another person a few minutes later, according to police.

In that carjacking attempt, the suspect shot the 37-year-old driver in the arm and shoulder, officials said. After the shooting, police said the suspect stole a different car, a Jeep that was later spotted dumped in the 1400 block of inner North Lake Shore Drive.

There, authorities said the suspect attempted a fourth carjacking - shooting the 84-year-old driver of that car as well. The driver suffered a grace wound to the shoulder, according to police.

Police said the suspect then ran into the lobby of a condo building and police swarming the area took him into custody.

He’s expected to face a slew of charges in the string of violent incidents, charges that were pending Friday morning.

Police said the officer who was carjacked was not hurt, and the two shooting victims were taken to area hospitals where they were expected to recover.

Further details, including the suspect's identity, were not immediately available as authorities continued to investigate.
