Man Carjacked Undercover Chicago Cop, Shot 2 People in Gold Coast: CPD

In a Thursday evening spree, a man carjacked an undercover Chicago officer and shot two other people in attempted carjackings spanning across the Near North Side and Gold Coast areas, according to Chicago police.

About 5:30 p.m., he started with the on-duty undercover officer, who was in an unmarked non-police vehicle in the 600 block of West Chicago, Chicago police Chief Kevin Ryan said.

The man took the officer’s vehicle to Rush and Oak Streets, where he tried to carjack another person a few minutes later, Ryan said. That person didn’t cooperate, so he shot them and carjacked another vehicle.

Officers later found that vehicle abandoned near Lake Shore Drive and Schiller Street, Ryan said. They went into the lobby of a condo building, where they found the carjacker and arrested him. He was armed with a semi-automatic pistol.

Outside the condo building, the suspect had tried to carjack “several” other people, one of which he shot, Ryan said.

Both people who were shot were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The undercover officer wasn’t hurt.

“I take this very personal,” Ryan said in a media briefing after the spree. “We are not going to let people come down here and do this.”

The suspect was taken to Area Central headquarters for questioning.

In an unrelated event, retired police officer fatally shot a man Wednesday who was trying to carjack him along with two other suspects on Chicago’s South Side, authorities said.
