Authorities Identify 2 Children Killed in Northwest Indiana Fire

Two young children were killed in a fire at their home in Gary, Indiana, on Sunday, authorities said.

Kristopher Gober, a 4-year-old boy, and Kailani Gober, a 2-year-old girl, were killed when a fire broke out at a building in the 5800 block of Forest Court at the Lakeshore Dunes Apartments complex, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.

The two were taken to Gary Methodist Northlake Hospital, officials said, where they were both pronounced dead just after 12:30 p.m.

Flames and smoke were first spotted coming from the fourth floor of the building at around 11:30 a.m., witnesses said.

Neighbors said the children who were trapped in the blaze were left home alone.

An 8-year-old boy was able to escape from the burning building unharmed, jumping from a fourth story window into a blanket held by members of the community, surviving an experience that his mother called "terrifying."

Fire officials deemed the apartment complex uninhabitable, displacing more than 100 residents, who were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is unknown as authorities continue to investigate.
