Some lawmakers in Springfield want to undo Cook County's 1 percent sales tax increase.
An Illinois House committee narrowly passed the proposal yesterday, sending it to the full House, the Daily Herald reported.
The proposal would repeal the 1 percent hike and force lawmakers to send the proposal to county voters if they want it reinstated.
The sales tax increase hurts business because consumers will eat and shop somewhere else, suburban lawmakers from both parties have claimed.
But without the tax increase, one of the county's hospitals would likely close, Cook County officials said.
