Queen for a Day

Not sure where to take Mom for Mother's Day this year? Read on for clues

Sure, Mom would be happy going anywhere to celebrate Mother's Day -- she just wants to be with you. Yeah, right. If your mother is anything like ours, she's expecting you to put some effort into where you spend the holiday, and you better believe she doesn't want to cook. Look for her personality type from our list below, and then pick up the phone to make reservations. Yes, now. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10, smarty pants.

Gourmet Goddess Mom: Maybe your mother is the type who can rhapsodize about her favorite meal and linger over a glass of champagne. She'll love a trip to Sixteen, the fine dining destination at the Trump International Hotel & Tower, where her thoughtful offspring will be springing for a Veuve Clicquot luncheon taking place on Saturday, May 9. Sixteen chef Frank Brunacci and sommelier Steven Lee, along with a representative from the winery, will present a meat fit for a queen honoring Madame Clicquot, a devoted wife, mother and winemaker. The event will begin with a reception at 12:30PM, and the four-course lunch menu paired with champagnes will begin at 1PM. All mothers in attendance will receive a book about the Veuve Clicquot winery and the life of Madame Clicquot, along with a bottle of grapeseed lotion. The Sixteen Veuve Clicquot luncheon is $70 per person; call 312-588-8030 to make a reservation.

Sporty Mom: Take your baseball fanatic mom to see the Schaumburg Flyers this Mother's Day. The indie Northern League team will treat moms to a Mother's Day Brunch at Alexian Field's Schaumburg Club, complete with salads; hot and cold entrees; omelet, pasta and carving stations; and an array of desserts. Guests will be able to watch an inter-squad scrimmage by the Flyers, and players, coaches and the "Bearon" mascot will mingle in the club. Two seatings are available at 10AM and 12:30PM. Adults are $24.95, and kids 5-12 are $12.95. Make your reservation at 847-524-0782.

"American Idol" Mom: Does your mother have a love of the spotlight? Take her to Duke's Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake for "Mother's Day Karaoke," an annual Duke's tradition. May we suggest a duet of "Surrender?" (Your mommy's alright, your daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird...) While the karaoke madness will take place from 9-11PM, Duke's will also host a Mother's Day all-you-can-eat brunch buffet and mimosa bar from 10:30AM-2PM for $19.99 per person.

Competitive Baker Mom: Many mothers take their recipes very, very seriously -- don't even try to bring store-bought cookies into her house. Show Mom her competition on Mother's Day at Gioco, Opera and Marche, where the chefs will be cooking up their mothers' favorite dessert recipes for $5 each. At Gioco, an Italian outpost in the South Loop, chef Danny Sweis will be making his mother's cookies along with traditional Italian dessert pastries. Also in the South Loop, Asian eatery Opera will feature chef Erica Fischer's mother's recipe for banana bread, which Fischer will pair with Asian pear sorbet and caramel sauce. (Sorry, Mom!) And at the French bistro Marche in the West Loop, chef Cory Patterson will re-create his mom's favorite dessert, a chocolate cake with pear mousse.
