Less is More for Preemies

Only one dose of steroids for at risk pregnancies

New research may change medical treatments for pregnant women who are at risk of having a premature baby.

Steroids given to pregnant women during pregnancy promotes lung development in the fetus and increase its chance of survival.

It was previously thought that if one dose worked well, then more doses would produce even better results for the baby.

But The Canadian Institute of Health Research reports that babies exposed to multiple doses of steroids were smaller than those who received one dose.
