Chicago Will Again Befriend “Public Enemies”

Report: Chicago press junket planned for new movie

Just a day or so ago, Chicago film buffs were disappointed that we wouldn't be among the first to see an advance screening of "Public Enemies" before the film opens on July 1. But oh what a difference a day makes.

It looks like Chicago will be getting a lot of love from the movie makers. Reelchicago.com reports that the movie, much of which was shot in Chicago, will be the site of a Universal Studios press junket on June 18 to promote the movie, possibly at Union Station.

And yes, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, who both star in the movie, are expected to attend.

So will Chicagoans be able to see the actual movie before the rest of the country? Only if you have deep pockets or great connections.

Crain's reports that a "hush-hush" event is scheduled for June 18 at the AMC River East theater. According to Crain's, the private, invitation-only screening will be followed by an exclusive party at the River East Art Center.

Expect to see some familiar names from Chicago's social set at the event, including Christie Hefner and her husband Billy Marovitz, and Mesirow Financial's Les Coney, according to Crain's.

Depp, who was a familiar face around the city during while the movie was being shot, plays John Dillinger in the film which chronicles the FBI's attempts to control a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
