The 23-year-old Streeterville film editor beat out dozens of other women in the first round of voting, and is now competing against nine others in the online vote that ends March 31. The winner gets a free trip to Hawaii.
"The trip is secondary. The important this is that I'm passionate about the cause and excited about having the opportunity to spread the word," Gerhart said.
The Columbia College grad adopted a vegetarian diet around five years ago, and this year made the leap to a full vegan lifestyle, which also cuts out dairy and honey and forbids the use of products made with animals.
"I have a really big heart for animals. I actually gave up beef as a kid because my aunt and uncle were dairy farmers and the cows were like pets," Gerhart said.
Her competition includes several -- shall we say -- "enhanced" ladies, but who is she worried about the most?
"Everybody's inspirational in their own way, and we're all interested in the same cause, so I don't even look at it as a competition," Gerhart says.
Ten guys are also competing for the crown in the male division.
