Tornado Warnings Issued as Dangerous Storms Hit the Chicago Area

The greatest threat remains south of I-80, while the metropolitan area could still see showers

After a cluster of showers passed through Chicago Sunday morning, severe storms made their way through area later in the evening.

Iroquois, Ford and Kankakee counties were under a Tornado Warning until 10:15 p.m., as area residents were urged to move to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Cook, Grundy, LaSalle, and Will counties through 11 p.m., and several counties were under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch as well.

Grundy, Kankakee, LaSalle, and Will counties in Illinois, and Jasper, LaPorte, Lake, and Newton counties in Indiana remained under the Watch through 1 a.m. Monday morning.

The National Weather Service also issued a Tornado Warning for Livingston and Grundy counties through 9:15 p.m.

The greatest threat of storms remained mainly south of I-80, and any thunderstorm developing in these conditions could bring a heavy downpour of rain.

The NWS also noted that wind gusts reaching 60 mph and even quarter-size hail were possible.

Scattered showers moved from west to east Sunday morning, producing heavy rainfall, with some areas seeing an inch to an inch-and-a-half of rain before storms initially left the area by around 12 p.m.

The storm risk is expected to diminish overnight Sunday, though the workweek could begin with another chance of showers early in the day and a high of 86 degrees.
