An attempted carjacking turned deadly when a thief opened fire on a driver who refused to give up his car on Chicago's Northwest Side early Thursday, according to police.
The incident took place at around 2:05 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Greenview Avenue in the city’s Noble Square neighborhood, authorities said.
28-year-old Jesus Delo Jimenez was dropping a woman off when a man got out of a white vehicle and attempted to carjack him, according to police.
Jimenez refused to give up his car and the suspect opened fire into the vehicle, striking the victim, officials said. He attempted to drive away, but crashed into a parked vehicle nearby.
“I heard a single gunshot. It was muffled, so it kind of sounded like a firecracker,” witness Kimberly Butler said. “But I knew immediately it was a gunshot.”
No other injuries were reported, and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on the fatality.
Jimenez, who was born in Mexico, owned a scooter rental business. He also was pursuing a degree in psychiatric nursing.

Second Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins called on police to dedicate resources to investigating the slaying, calling the shooter a "dangerous criminal."
“This is an especially dangerous criminal, who would choose to murder this unarmed victim simply because he was attempting to flee,” he said.
No one is in custody, according to police, who continue to investigate.
