Jason Hammel Gets Big Surprise at Locker Wednesday

Chicago Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel is well on his way to becoming a potato chip enthusiast at the behest of team doctors, but even he didn’t expect what was waiting for him in the clubhouse before Wednesday’s game.

As Hammel came in, he was confronted by a six-foot tall stack of boxes from Utz, filled with bags of potato chips. Hammel didn’t ask for the chips, but the company sent them anyway:

Hammel’s potato chip story started as the second half of the season got underway, when team doctors recommended the snack as a way for the pitcher to prevent cramping issues. Hammel has dealt with those issues throughout his time with the Cubs, and the problem seems to get worse the deeper the season goes on.

“My prescription is potato chips,” he told reporters last week. “Because they have a lot of potassium. So I focused on that over the break. I ate a lot of potato chips over the break, and it turned out okay.”

Hammel’s new strategy seems to be paying off. In his first post All-Star Game outing, the hurler threw six innings of one-run ball, striking out seven batters in a 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers.
