Judge to City: Don't Touch Lucas Museum Site Yet

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the city not to physically alter the proposed site of the George Lucas Museum until further order of the court during the opening legal battle between the city and opponents of the museum.

Friends of the Park filed suit earlier this month asking a federal judge to stop the proposed construction of the site on two parking lots south of Soldier Field. The filmmaker wants to be a state-of-the-art museum there.

U.S. District Judge John Darrah asked city lawyers if they could guarantee the lots wouldn’t be ripped up sometime overnight -- as Mayor Daley did notoriously with Meigs Field -- until the next court hearing.

City lawyers stopped short of offering iron-clad guarantees, and the judge entered his order.

The museum last week announced the development would be guided by Crystal Bridge Museum of American Art president Don Bacigalupi.
