Park District Truck Slides Into Lake Michigan

Officials were called about a vehicle in the lake near Lake Shore Drive and Oak Street about 10:35 a.m.

The driver of a Chicago Park District truck was able to get out before his vehicle slid into Lake Michigan, but the truck remained submerged early Friday.

Officials were called about a vehicle in the lake near Lake Shore Drive and Oak Street about 10:35 a.m.

Ron Dorneker, the Deputy District Chief of the Chicago Fire Department's Marine & Dive Operations, said the driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital as a precaution.

The park district vehicle, which had been at the lake for graffiti removal, was completely submerged at midday.

"Depending on the ice conditions -- and we'll talk to the tow truck driver and the police department -- we'll decide when the vehicle will be removed from the water," he said.

Boats from the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department were on the water searching for the truck.

A Chicago Park District spokeswoman told NBC Chicago the lakefront bike path would be closed until further notice so crews could clear and de-ice it.
