An 8-year-old boy was shot and killed in a Dolton home Tuesday night.

Family and witnesses said the boy and his 11-year-old brother were home alone when the younger boy shot himself while playing with a gun he'd found in the home.

"We haven't established all the particulars yet. A handgun has been recovered in the home. We have to interview the family members and so on to find out whose gun it was and where it was taken from the house," said Dolton police Lt. Harry Blaundin.

Blauden said the shooting in the single-family home in the 14100 block of Calumet Avenue was a death investigation and not that of a homicide.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
