Video Shows Dramatic Confrontation as Man is Shot in Bucktown Alley

Two weeks after a man walking home from a night out was shot during an attempted robbery in an alley in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, dramatic footage of the confrontation has been released.

The video was captured by several cameras at Covenant Presbyterian Church and shows the victim walking in an alley just before 3 a.m. near Dickens and Damen on Sept. 11.

In the footage, a car drives past him before turning onto Charleston, where two men get out and return to the alley armed with at least one gun.

A violent confrontation ensues for about a minute and a half, with the men slamming the victim against a building at one point.

It ends with a gunshot, and the two men run back to the car.

“It was just a loud bang, really loud, so it woke both my wife and my up,” said resident Vince Fosco. “We just saw a person walking straight down. At that point the two guys who shot him already took off.”

The victim walked to a nearby home for help.

“I heard tapping at my window,” said resident Max Schweikert. “I got up and checked the door and there’s this guy just covered in blood in my window and I asked him if he was OK and I called CPD.”

Police processed the scene, but no arrest has been made as of Monday, a frustrating reality for the many residents horrified by what they saw on their cameras.

“We have two predators that shot a gentleman in the stomach and are still walking around the streets of the city,” said Steven Jensen, president of the Bucktown Community Organization.

The property manager for Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gene Pierson, said he hopes someone will recognize the men in the video.

“The whole neighborhood is surprised and shocked-- shootings just don't happen that often in Bucktown,” he said.

The victim underwent surgery for his gunshot wound and is recovering at home. Chicago police said an investigation remains ongoing.
