Two Dead, 15 Wounded in Mother's Day Weekend Shootings

Among those injured was a 17-year-old girl

Two people have died and at least 15 were injured in shootings citywide this Mother's Day weekend.

The first fatal shooting happened just before noon on Saturday in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Two men, both age 23, were standing in the sidewalk in the 7400 block of South Cottage Grove when two more men walked up to them and began shooting, police said. One of the victims was shot in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The other man was shot in the torso, neck and head. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died, police said.

No one is in custody. A police source said both victims are documented gang members.

Another man was killed Saturday afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Marcus D. Franklin, was on the sidewalk in the 7200 block of South Green at about 12:55 p.m. when someone walked up and shot him repeatedly in the neck and chest, police said.

Franklin was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

At least 14 others were injured in shootings since Friday evening: 

  • A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 9 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of West 80th Street in the Chatham neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 27-year-old man was shot in the arm at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 6200 block of South May in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. The man was walking in the block when he heard gunshots and realized he'd been struck in his left arm. He took himself to Saint Bernard Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg and back just before noon Saturday in the 13200 block of South Langley on the Far South Side, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 23-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her head at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday near 79th Street and Champlain in the Chatham neighborhood, police said. The woman was standing on the street when she heard shots and realized she'd been struck. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition stabilized.
  • A 32-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 7000 block of South Sangamon in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 38-year-old man was shot multiple times in the foot at about 6 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of West Madison in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • A 17-year-old girl was shot in the ankle at about 9 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of South Wood on the Near West Side, police said. The girl was walking with another person when someone fired shots from a passing dark-colored vehicle. The girl was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where her condition stabilized.
  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the knee at about 4:35 a.m. Sunday in the 0-100 block of North Long in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The man was with a woman when another man walked up, pulled out a gun and fired multiple times in his direction. He was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 32-year-old man was shot in the torso at about 5:50 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of West Lake Street on the Near West Side, police said. The man was standing near Union Park when another an walked up to him and opened fire. The victim was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 50-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of West Division in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 32-year-old man was shot repeatedly at about 4 p.m. in the 7400 block of South St. Lawrence in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • Just before 6 p.m., two teens were shot near a basketball court in Micek Park on Chicago's Southwest Side. The teens were standing in the park when a gray sedan pulled up and a man exited the car and opened fire. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the left elbow and a 15-year-old boy was shot in the right buttocks. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. Police said both teens are documented gang members and Area Central detectives are investigating. 
  • Around 6:45 p.m., police said a 22-year-old man was shot in the foot in the 0-100 block of South Rockwell. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, but details surrounding the shooting weren't immediately available.
